About Forecast Finland
FMI's own forecasts, taken seriously. The Finnish Meteorological Institute publishes an unusually good set of open data and publishes it free, with no key. This site renders six of its products on one instrument: the forecaster-edited grid behind the national service — updated by meteorologists through the day, out to ten days — the raw 2.5 km MEPS run underneath it, the ECMWF ten-day outlook on a Europe frame, the WAM Baltic wave model, the NEMO sea model, and the national radar composite every five minutes.
Navigate by place, not by zoom. The quarters, the nineteen maakunnat, towns from Hanko to Utsjoki, the named sea areas of the marine forecast — each is a framing you press a button for, and the finest model that covers the place answers. Flipping between models holds the valid time, so what changes on screen is the forecast, not the camera.
The products
| Product | Grid | Runs | Reach | Fields |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FMI Edited | ~7 km, Scandinavia | through the day | T+240 | 17, incl. P(thunder), fog and precipitation form |
| MEPS | 2.5 km (MetCoOp) | 8 × day | T+66 | 21, incl. visibility, CAPE, 850/700/500/300 hPa |
| ECMWF | ~15 km subset, Europe | 2 × day | T+240 | 10, the synoptic set aloft and at the surface |
| Baltic Waves (WAM) | ~3 km, whole Baltic | 4 × day | T+66 | wave height, direction, swell |
| Baltic Sea (NEMO) | ~2 km, whole Baltic | daily | T+120 | sea temperature, salinity, currents |
| Radar | ~1 km composite | every 5 min | now | rain rate, measured |
How it is rendered
Absolute colour scales. Every ramp is pinned to fixed values — temperature from −40 to +35 °C, wind banded on the Finnish scale (navakka 8, kova 14, myrsky 21, hirmumyrsky 33 m/s), wave height on a scale that tops out at the Baltic's own measured maximum. A loop therefore shows the weather changing, never the palette re-fitting itself, and the same colour means the same number on every model.
A value under every pixel. The rendered maps are reversible: point anywhere and the readout reports the number the colour encodes, and the city labels print the model's own values, sampled on the native grid before any resampling. MSLP carries real isobars, traced from the full-precision field rather than from the picture.
Straight from the source. Everything arrives as GRIB2 from FMI's open-data download service (the radar as 16-bit GeoTIFF from the open WMS), is decoded, warped and colour-mapped once, and served as static imagery. No screenshots of anyone else's maps, no rescaling per frame, no account, no tracking.
Credit, and what this is not
All model and radar data are © the Finnish Meteorological Institute, published as open data under CC BY 4.0; ECMWF fields are ECMWF data republished by FMI; MEPS is run jointly with MET Norway and SMHI as MetCoOp. This site is not affiliated with FMI, and it is not a source of weather warnings — those are issued at ilmatieteenlaitos.fi, and nothing here supersedes them.
