What am I looking at?

Two forecasts of the same weather, drawn on the same colour scale so they can be read against one another. FMI Edited is the grid Finland's own meteorologists issue — the forecast behind the national service, adjusted by hand through the day and carried to ten days. MEPS is the raw 2.5 km HARMONIE-AROME run underneath it, shared with MET Norway and SMHI, out to T+66 and carrying the fields an edited forecast does not: visibility, CAPE, radiation and the levels aloft. ECMWF holds the ten-day synoptic outlook on a Europe frame, and the Baltic wave, sea and radar products cover the water and the moment.

Switching model holds the valid time, not the forecast hour, and the Finland-frame models share one time axis — hourly to T+36, three-hourly after. So flipping between the forecaster's grid and the raw model shows a real disagreement between two forecasts of the same instant, rather than an artefact of comparing two different moments on two different clocks.

Fields are drawn straight from FMI's published output with no smoothing and no rescaling — colour ramps are pinned to absolute values, so a loop shows real intensity changes rather than a palette re-fitting itself each frame. Temperatures are Celsius and winds metres per second, banded on the Finnish scale — navakka at 8, kova at 14, myrsky at 21 — the way every forecast and every warning in the country states them. For warnings, ilmatieteenlaitos.fi is always the authority.
